Ang Song Nian
Hanging Heavy On My Eyes
Singapore, 2016
Self-published, Hardcover

Hanging Heavy On My Eyes looks at the recurring situation in Singapore and its region of prolonged haze spells due to increased forest fires in neighbouring Indonesia contributing to severe air pollution conditions. Based on the artist’s collection of average recordings data of the particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5), the exhibition recalls the artist’s experience with the discomfort and unease of reduced and affected visibility – a result of conditions in human’s continuous bid to control, intervene and manipulate landscapes and environment aligned to narrow-minded agendas.

About The Artist

Ang Song Nian 洪松年 (b. 1983, Singapore) works with found materials and traces of human behaviours made visible within landscapes through photographic documentations and installation. Intrigued by the narration of thoughts and ideologies through visuals, he has always favoured a microscopic approach to concepts and narration, a style which he always employ to open up details in photography. His recent exhibitions include Unearthed at the Singapore Art Museum, Engaging Perspectives at the Centre for Contemporary Art (Singapore). He has exhibited in the Photo Espana Festival (Spain), Lianzhou International Photo Festival (China), Dali International Photo Festival (China), Gallery Jinsun (Seoul, South Korea), Hanmi Gallery (London) and the Institut d’Estudis Ilerdencs (Lleida, Spain). Song Nian’s works has been awarded the Winner for Photography in the Noise Singapore 2012, selected for the top 30 finalists in the Sovereign Asian Art Prize in both 2011 and 2014, eCrea Award (Spain, 2010) and honourable mentions in Magenta Foundation Flash Forward (UK, 2010) and Association of Photographers Awards (UK, 2010). In 2012, he was awarded the International Graduate Scholarship for his graduate studies at the London College of Communication, University of the Arts London.

THEBOOKSHOP
by THEBOOKSHOW

THEBOOKSHOW is a Singapore-based initiative that began in 2014. It aims to act as a platform for aspiring artists to showcase books conceived out of passion. Through the use of the book, a basic and familiar medium, THEBOOKSHOW advances towards being a mediator between the art world and the general public. Our hope is to bring a renewed perspective upon our eyes. We believe very much in challenging the medium - moving away from the conventional form that the book takes. In time, we hope to build a substantial database advocating that the book form is an art in and of itself.
